Boobs and Bikinis

Now that I have your attention...I am tempted to draw some SFF art featuring suggestively posed big-boobed women clad in scanty outfits just to piss off all those SFF writers who are endlessly complaining about such things! GOOD GRIEF!!!

I tell you, if I actually went ahead and drew such things, it would probably get my work more attention than it gets now. Gosh, could it be THAT'S why you see women depicted in such a manner in SFF art, to get attention?

Not that anyone has seemed to notice, but I tend not to draw suggestively posed big-boobed women clad in scanty outfits. In my art, I tend to draw women like this:

Redcap of Dunnor Peel

Grisly deeds done in days of yore
Forever tainted Dunnor Peel.
Evil acts performed in years past
On guiltless babe and stainless maid
Cursed tall tower, damned lordly hall.
Behind those walls where murder reigned,
Where grim laird once held bloody sway,
A borderland haunt prowls the dark.

Atop night-blackened battlements,
Phantom lights and eldritch murmurs
Disturb midnight's starlit stillness.
Iron-shod footsteps stomp across
Wooden floors long rotted away.
Within that fortress cold and dank,
A fiery-eyed dwarf roams the dark.

A human caught in Dunnor falls
To a pikestaff wickedly thrust
Right through his beating mortal heart.
The savagely gruesome goblin
Re-dyes his faded crimson cap
In a pool of freshly spilt blood.
With gore-stained hat upon his pate,
A murdering fiend stalks the dark.

Real Writers Never Write About the Supernatural

So, is is true that real writers never write about the supernatural?

Let's see, if this is true, then Bram Stoker wasn't a real writer. Edgar Allan Poe, Joseph Sheridan LeFanu, and Algernon Blackwood weren't real writers either. Neither was Shirley Jackson, since The Haunting of Hill House happens to be one of the great literary ghost stories of the 20th century. Henry James may be off the list of real writers, too, depending on how you interpret the events in The Turn of the Screw.

Stephen King must not be a real writer. Neither is Peter Straub. Stephanie Meyer is right out!

I'm out, too, since I have been known to write supernatural fiction. Poetry, too!

Surprise: Artwork Published in January Issue of BEYOND CENTAURI!

Well, this is interesting...I just found out that my pulp-ish sci-fi artwork "Giant Alien Bug Attack!" was actually published, in the January 2013 issue of Beyond Centauri. I even confirmed the fact with my own eyes, by purchasing a pdf copy from the White Cat Publications Bookstore (it's there on page 27, in glorious full-colour). Not that I doubted what I was told, I just wanted to see it for myself. Plus, I've taken to obtaining an e-copy of publications containing my work every now and then, even when I'm supposed to receive a print contributor's copy (which, I'm told, should be forthcoming over the next few weeks).

I did not know about this publication until now. Consider that "Giant Alien Bug Attack!" was one of the works I asked WCP to release back to me, a sticky situation could have arisen had I sent the work to another publication. Luckily, I instead added the piece to my RedBubble portfolio and Azure Lion Productions Zazzle store. Sticky situation avoided!

WCP Sorts Out the Mess

As I said I would if White Cat Publications sorted out the Sam's Dot mess, I must congratulate them for doing just that. I received my payment and all is now settled. That's one less thing for me to worry about. With all the other worries I have in my life at the moment, one less worry is definitely a good thing.

"My Darkly Dear Leanan-Sidhe" Published in BETE NOIRE Issue #11

A reprint dark poem of mine, "My Darkly Dear Leanan-Sidhe", has been published in Issue #11 of Bete Noire. The poem, which is a series of four cinquains inspired by the lore of the fairy muse known as Leanan-Sidhe, was originally published in the August 2010 issue of Sounds of the Night. Now it has been published again.

Why doesn't this surprise me much? (I used the first few paragraphs of my dark fantasy story "Vengeance of the Alpe".)

"Shedroid on Tentacles" in [NAMEL3SS] Magazine, Issue 2

Even though my name was omitted from the ToC listed on the [Nameless] Magazine web-site, I do have an artwork in [NAMEL3SS] Magazine, Issue 2 (Fall/Winter 2012), which was just released recently. You can catch a glimpse of my "Shedroid on Tentacles" in this video, at about 27 seconds in. As a matter of fact, on the audio, it is even pointed out as a piece by Richard Fay!

BTW, this isn't the first time that an artwork of mine has been published in a zine, but my name was omitted from the ToC listed on-line. The same thing happened to me with the publication of my artwork "The Dark Host' in the All Souls' Night 2012 issue of Hungur. That time, I didn't find out that the piece was actually published until January of this year! This time, I have video proof of publication (not to mention, I've already purchased and downloaded an electronic copy of the zine - "Shedroid on Tentacles" is on page 216).

"Giant Alien Bug Attack!" on REDBUBBLE



Since my sci-fi artwork "Giant Alien Bug Attack!" had been stuck in publication limbo for so long (first accepted for publication back in January 2012), and since the rights to the piece have now been released back to me, I figured it was high-time I do something about getting it out there myself. So, I have added the work to my RedBubble portfolio.

"Giant Alien Bug Attack!" was meant to be my homage to the pulp sci-fi of years ago, with a bit of a twist. Note that the woman is the one firing at the giant bug, while her male companion runs away. That was quite deliberate.

I'm still willing to send this piece to any editors or publishers who might ask for it, but I felt I had waited long enough for this piece to see publication that never happened. Now people can finally see it.

Thanking Publication's Good Guys and Gals


Since I seem to be bad-mouthing the publication industry a lot lately, I wanted to take the time to thank all those editors and publishers who have treated me fairly, who have dealt with me decently and professionally.

Three Illustrations in SORCEROUS SIGNALS

Now, for a bit of better news: three of my illustrations appear in the May - Jul '13 issue of the on-line fantasy zine Sorcerous Signals. I did an illustration for Matthew Wilson's poem "The Sorcerer", Robert Collins' story "The Templar Conspiracy", and Charles Von Nordheim's poem "The Yeoman Praises Wizards". I especially like the design of my composition for "The Templar Conspiracy"(I could draw Templars in my sleep), but I think all three were right up my alley. Illustrating medieval-type fantasy may be my forte. The editor seemed quite pleased with all three.

Looking on the Bright Side...


A positive side to Janrae Frank telling me she paid someone else to redo the illustrations, because her staff decided that mine were not appropriate:

Aside from a few high points, I always thought Janrae's book Serpent's Quest was godawful raunchy trash. Whenever she asked me what I though about it, I always had to be diplomatic in my responses. Illustrating the book was work I was hired to do, so I did the job, and did the best damned job I could, but I was never entirely comfortable with the idea of my name being attached to it. Now I don't have to worry. Someone else is the illustrator of that garbage, not me.

In some ways, it's actually freeing to know this.

The downside? I now have six unusable illustrations that I will never be paid for and that will never see publication.

No Illustrations of Mine for Janrae


And, the publication world makes damned sure it kicks me when I'm down. This is what Janrae Frank just told me regarding a series of six illustrations I did for one of her raunchy erotic fantasy novels, after she previously praised my work and made several unfulfilled promises of payment: 

"I paid someone else to redo the illustrations, because my staff decided that yours were not appropriate."

Nope, I can't deal with unreliable nutters like this any longer.

It seems as though Janrae doesn't like that I mentioned her by name when talking about people who have me do work but don't pay me for it. She first approached me to do the illustrations back in late 2011. I got the first of the series sent off on Sun, Dec 4, 2011. I got the sixth and last one sent off  on Feb 29, 2012. Janrae initially offered one amount, but then upped the offer (which I happily agreed to). However, she then offered me a partial payment when her distributor failed to pay her and the funds weren't there to pay me. When I rejected that last offer, she said she decided not to use the illustrations. That was on  September 29, 2012.

Janrae then approached me again more recently saying she should have a check in March or April that would cover the art and wondered if I was still interested in having her use it. I told her the illustrations were hers if she paid me. Well, she never paid me, and she never responded to my follow-up message. She sure as hell responded when I singled her out publicly as a person who had me do work but never paid.

I'm sick of not getting paid for work I've done in good faith. I'm sick of entering into agreements in good faith and, through no fault of my own, seeing those agreements go up in smoke. I will only tolerate shit for so long.

Contract for Publication of "The Redcap of Glamtallon"


The bit about "payment upon publication" seems pretty damned clear to me:

Contract for [The Redcap of Glamtallon] by [Richard Fay]

AGREEMENT dated this day [May 20, 2012], in which SAM'S DOT PUBLISHING agrees with [Richard Fay] hereinafter referred to as Author, that Author grants SAM'S DOT PUBLISHING the exclusive right for 180 days from the date of publication to publish the written products, titled [The Redcap of Glamtallon] and hereinafter referred to as The Work, which will appear in the following publication[s].

a. print and electronic: [Cover of Darkness, March 2013]

Author also grants SAM'S DOT PUBLISHING the non-exclusive right for one year from the date of publication to publish The Work electronically, in or as an eBook.

In consideration of the above right[s], Author is to receive the following:

a. payment of [$15.00 per short story] upon publication: [$15.00]

b. one contributor's copy of the publication in which The Work appears.

c. Author is entitled to purchase as many personal copies of The Work as desired, at a discount of [25%] from the cover price, plus postage.

Author guarantees that The Work is the Author's own and that the Author has the right to grant the use of it to SAM'S DOT PUBLISHING. SAM'S DOT PUBLISHING will print a copyright notice in Author's name and, if applicable, a publication history along with The Work, but registration with the Copyright Office, if desired, is the Author's responsibility.

The Work will not be printed after 120 days from the date of publication, which is 1 March 2013. But the edition containing The Work will continue to be sold until supplies that exist after 120days are exhausted.

Author retains all other rights, including the rights to modify or sell The Work, as long as such modification or sale does not abrogate or infringe upon the rights herein purchased by SAM'S DOT PUBLISHING.

This contract shall be issued to the Author in electronic or print version, as appropriate. The terms of the contract shall become binding when the Author responds with words of agreement to the terms of the contract by e-mail, or responds with a signed copy of this contract by postal mail.

"The Redcap of Glamtallon" Has Definitely Been Published


An absolute confirmation that COVER OF DARKNESS Issue 14 has indeed been published; I just purchased a pdf version from the White Cat Publications bookstore:

Not only was I able to download a copy of the zine, I even have a receipt for the purchase! And, yes, my story "The Redcap of Glamtallon" does indeed appear within.

Some Thoughts Regarding the WCP Sam's Dot "Jane Doe" Post and My Reactions to that Post


Since I have been very vocal regarding my displeasure over the whole Sam's Dot/White Cat/"Jane Doe" mess and how it seems to have affected the White Cat/Sam's Dot merger, it has come to my attention that I might appear to be defending a child molester.

Let me make it perfectly clear here and now, I am not defending what Tyree Campbell did 32 years ago. However, I was always under the impression that he had served his sentence, had paid his debt to society. I feel it was improper and rather worrisome that Rick Moore of WCP made a public post dragging that skeleton out of Tyree's closet and suggesting that Sam's Dot Publishing is a part of the whole "Jane Doe" mess, that Sam's Dot Publishing the company cannot be separated from Tyree Campbell the man. In Moore's own words:

"I knew about the allegations when I took on Sam’s Dot Publishing, but at first believed the magazines and books were separate from the individual. I was wrong. I don’t think that anymore."

It appears to me that Moore's "Jane Doe" post goes way beyond a personal attack against Tyree Campbell and strays into the territory of sullying the reputations of all who were involved, one way or another, with the small press that Tyree owned and operated. The implication is there that all Sam's Dot books and magazines are tainted by Tyree's involvement. Taking that one step further, it could be argued that all previous Sam's Dot editors and contributors are also tainted by their involvement with the company and its books and magazines. Perhaps my perceptions are skewed at the moment, but right now, that's the way it looks to me.

I'm a freelancer who has done freelance work for a number of publishers and editors, Sam's Dot being only one of many. If I'm defending anyone or anything here, first and foremost, I'm defending myself and my own reputation. I'm also defending the reputations of all other previous Sam's Dot contributors, as well as the reputations of all those former Sam's Dot editors who always treated me fairly. So far, WCP has done little but make lots of promises, some of which have already proved to be empty ones (contributors will hardly notice a difference, business will go on as usual, the Sam's Dot zines will continue to be published, Sam's Dot editors will be retained, the transition will be a smooth one, Sam's Dot zines will see an increased distribution, etc. etc. etc.).

FYI, the story WCP is telling regarding the transition troubles doesn't completely match the story various former Sam's Dot editors are telling. Who am I to believe in this whole mess?

I can't believe I feel like I have to post this. What a nightmare! At this moment in time, I'm thoroughly and utterly disgusted!

"The Dark Host" on Redbubble

I have added the full-colour version of my dark artwork "The Dark Host" to my Redbubble portfolio, where it is available on cards, prints, posters, T shirts, hoodies, stickers, iPhone cases, and iPad cases. This work originally appeared, as a black and white interior illustration, in the All Souls' Night 2012 issue of Hungur. Personally, I think the colour version is more effective. There is a 3D effect to the colour version that is missing from the black and white one.
